...

i've been researching how much land it takes for a person to be self sufficient. these guys http://thesietch.org/mysietch/greenspree/2007/07/17/self-sufficiency/ reckon it's about 0.1 acres per person, or about 400 square metres.

the secong image is from the artist rosalie gascoigne. this is one of her works that recycles road signs she'd found. i've been thinking about similar possibilies for cladding walls.

Wk4 compilation of work

Precedent studies

Here are my '2' precedent studies.
The second page is more a collection of ideas as I'm unsure about what I want to do right now. My focus is on a pm activated spce that maybe serves a completely different function during the day. I'm also interested in the idea being evolutionary. No precedents of that nature yet...

SITE 03 - WALKING TRACKS

Precedents

Big Box Biofuel Generators - Alan Berger
Disused store and adjacent car parks used for renewable energy production. Could apply the same principles to multi-storey carparks

Tickle Cock Underpass - DSDHA Architects
Existing 1890's underpass rebuilt to include shelter, seating and landscaping.

PARKADE VIDEO

week 3 video

Posting my .avi from last week.
it's a series of images taken while walking from shouthern cross station to etihad stadium, and then under the bridge and adjoining carpark (my site). The audio is a recording of the samewalk and roughly lines up with the images. The EKG is a reference point for the sound levels and is meant to be the viewer (or walker). A bit cheesy, but it flat lines at the stadium because I figured it has to die to find life... signs of life. The EKG is real. The rhythmical clicking sounds are made by pedestrian light indicators. The longer you stay, the louder they get

Precedent Studies

This is my second precedent study is the re-use of an abandon structure (coal refinery) in Germany turn into a museum by OMA Architects.

Precedent Study

Currently the 2 projects I have chosen to study are Boston's "Big Dig" and the reuse of a silo structure into a rock climbing facility.

The Big Dig study is interesting as it looks at how the left over space of an arterial road can be incorporated into the city fabric. I will also take this further to look at how the materials of the former arterial structure can be used in the formation of a new building.

Whilst the Silo rock climbing wall does not involve a piece of infrastructure left over by cars, it does however show a unique and interesting approach to using a structure whose design and form were specific to its function.

Precedent Study

I had chosen a local example for my case study. The Bank Apartments is a 6 star greenstar residential apartment in south melbourne. Sustainable is an upcoming trend in recent year and also the near future. More people are aware of the importance of living or working inside a green building. Another thing it interest me is that the project had integrate with another heritage building which I find it useful to my propose site.

Precedent Study

I'll be looking at the pedestrianisation of trafalgar square. With only a simple structure added on the existing site, pedestrian movement is increased by thirteen times.

Project by Foster + Partners.

will be posting another study soon

FROG’S DREAM
McMansions Turned into Biofilter Water Treatment Plants
By: Calvin Chiu
It's not a petrol station and its a concept not a built system, but it looks at the idea of a network of unutilised sites working together to filter water which we are lacking, an idea I was interested in looking at.. and it seems appropriate for our utopian studio...

Precedence...

I have chosen 'the Living Tower' by SOA architects as my precedence, again this isn't a car park but I feel that it is relevent in terms of size and structure with my car park, and it explores angles which I am very interested pursuing. As for my other space I am yet to settle on a precedence.

Apart from these great pictures, there is a very interesting website by Dr Dickson Despommier from Colombia University, http://www.verticalfarming.com/ , definitely worth a look.

Precedent studies

So far i had only decided on one precedent studies which is an interesting project in sweeden, a green roof hillside cities project which transforms a vacant city block, originally parking lots and football field into a self-contained sustainable city interspersed with cycling paths and walkways.
